Where To Find Coloring Art Classes?

Maybe you’re looking to learn ways of coloring to make your coloring pictures more vivid.  Maybe you’d like to see how a different brand of marker performs?  Good news! There’s a class for that!

Coloring classes can be found online, on social media sites, and at local arts and crafts stores.  You can find classes for free or purchase, and connect with others who share your passion for coloring.

When searching for adult coloring classes online, 42,000,000 results populate.  So let’s try to simplify that.

Let’s go surfing!

Two websites appear frequently in our results: skillshare.com  and kitandclowder.com.  Based on just this fact, let’s see what they have to offer.

Skillshare

Skillshare offers free classes on a variety of topics from how-to videos to marketing your creative business.  This does not mean, if you are a coloring hobbyist, this site is out of your league.  Skillshare offers classes for all skill levels from beginner to advanced.

To access the classes best for coloring, click on Illustration from the Browse drop-down menu.  Next, you’ll see a list of instructional videos.  Rather than scrolling through the classes, we’ll use the search option.  Entering what you use to color is the easiest way to filter the classes.

For example, if you use colored pencils, you’ll type colored pencils in the search field.  If you want to narrow your search further, perhaps to only include Beginner classes, you can use the filters on the left side of the page.

Another convenient option Skillshare offers is that you don’t have to create an account on the website to access the free classes.  They also offer an app for Apple and Android so you can watch and learn wherever and whenever is convenient.

Kit and Clowder

Kit and Clowder is a website from Alyce Keegan in Australia.  Keegan is an award-winning businesswoman with a passion for coloring and its therapeutic effects.  She offers both free and fee-based classes.

To allow class purchases to be made internationally, Keegan has a Currency Convertor on the home page. You’ll want to ensure you’ve chosen the correct currency from the drop-down for an accurate price per class.

For example, to purchase a class within the United States you would choose USD ($) from the Currency Converter drop-down menu.

The Class Shop is where you’ll find the available classes.  To better understand how to choose a class, check out the information listed in the Class Breakdown Here link near the top of the page.

There are six categories of classes including one listing the free classes.  You can browse through the class description in any of the categories, but if you want to take a class you have to create an account profile, but it is also free.

A great benefit Kit and Clowder offer for all classes, whether you take a free class or purchase one, they include one-on-one assistance for feedback or questions and classes are downloadable for keeping. Skillshare and Kit and Clowder have associated Facebook and Instagram pages where you can learn extra tips, get feedback about your coloring, and find information about new classes.

Can I just watch a tutorial?

Of course!  The easiest way to find instructional videos online is to visit YouTube. There are plenty of tutorials from beginner to advanced with instructions for a variety of techniques to enhance your coloring page. You can even learn to make your coloring page look like a watercolor painting!

If you want to learn more than what is contained in a ten-minute video, check out blogs.

Blogs

What makes a blog better?  Not only do you have instructional videos, but the blog author posts further information for each topic.  Let’s explore two great blogs for coloring tutorials: sarahrenaeclark.com  and vanillaarts.com

  • Sarah Renae Clark

Sara Renae Clark, the same name as her blog, is a coloring enthusiast who began exploring adult coloring books with the idea of creating her own.  She offers downloadable coloring books, individual coloring pages, and tutorials for free and fee-based.

Under the Blog heading on her home page is where you will find Adult Coloring Tutorials.  Once you’ve brought up that page, the best way to search is by what you use to color.

For example, if you color with markers, type markers in the search field.  These results provide tutorials for all skill levels who use markers to color.

  • Vanilla Arts Co.

Amy Shulke is the technical illustrator behind Vanilla Arts Co., a blog for those wanting to go beyond the beginner level of coloring. She uses Copic brand markers in her tutorials, however, you can perform any techniques you learn with any brand of marker.

The information posted to Vanilla Arts Co. is free, but the classes are not.  If you’re looking to learn about techniques and tips, the Free Resources drop-down menu offers links to her archived posts.

If you would like to take a class, the best first step is to check out the link under the Classes header called “What Skill Level Are You?” to help determine which category of classes to explore.

Vanilla Art Co. offers classes for all coloring skill levels who use colored pencils and markers.

Where can I find more people who like to color?

If you’re looking for a community of adult coloring fans and learn more about coloring, social media is the place to go.  Let’s take a look at Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest.

Facebook

By typing in adult coloring to the Facebook search field, results for a variety of pages, groups, and events populate.  To get you started, here are a few sites with a large community base, offering great information to any skill level of coloring.

  • Adult Coloring Worldwide

Adult Coloring Worldwide is a very interactive private group for anyone with a passion for coloring from beginner to advanced skill levels.  Members of the group post pictures they color, ask for suggestions and share tips and ideas.

Each post is labeled with the coloring book name, artist, and the medium used to color.  This is great bonus information if you happen to be looking for a new coloring book or want to see what differences there are between coloring with markers and colored pencils.

  • Coloring Books for Adults

Coloring Books for Adults is a public group page.  Members of this group share tips and techniques for coloring and finished coloring pages.  There is a high level of interaction between members and, like Adult Coloring Worldwide, posts are labeled with coloring book names, artists, and mediums.

  • Adult Coloring

Adult Coloring is a public group page.  Members post finished coloring pages including the names of coloring books, artists, and mediums used.  Some post personal tutorial videos, but member interaction isn’t as high as viewed on other group pages.

Pinterest

Pinterest is a great place to spark ideas and learn.  Entering adult coloring into the search field yields results, also called Pins, for downloadable coloring pages as well as tutorials.  Pinterest, also, offers a cool way to organize the Pins you’ve saved to your profile.

You can create a Board!  Here’s how you do it.  On your Pinterest Profile page, click on the “+” icon on the right side of the page and choose Create a Board.  You can name the Board after the main theme of your search or anything you like.

For example, let’s say you want to collect printable pages of animals to color.  Using the “+” choose to Create a Board and enter a name for it, like “Animal Pages”.  Now, each time you save an animal coloring page, you can place it on the Animal Pages board to easily find it later.

Instagram

Instagram is a great place to get ideas and see a gallery’s worth of finished coloring pages.  Many results you get when searching adult coloring on Instagram are pages belonging to individual people.  It’s better to search by the company that creates the coloring tools you use.

For example, searching Prismacolor or Copic will take you to the Instagram pages for these specific companies.  These pages offer tips, and buying guides, and respond to questions about coloring techniques or those who are looking for tips.

What if I want an in-person class?

It can be difficult to find in-person coloring classes.  Arts and crafts stores offer free classes that are project-focused.  Look for classes that spotlight a specific brand of marker, for example, to come the closest to teaching techniques for coloring.

The best option is to first check the websites of your local arts and crafts stores to see if any classes are being offered.  Another suggestion would be to contact your local art galleries which sometimes offer public classes.
