Best Color by Number Books for Adults

Color-by-number books are not just for kids. A simple search will reveal a shocking variety of these books for adults, but there are certainly some that stand out above the rest.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, but each book on this list earned its unique spot. Check out what was loved in each one.

Color by Number – Birds

features unique spiral binding that makes it easier to focus on a single page and remove them as needed. Each of the 27 images has a color key swatch palette underneath, so there is no need to flip back and forth to check the colors. If you need some help visualizing the final product there is a full-color answer key at the back. Check your work when you are done, then tear out the beautiful pages to display or gift.

Color by Number Patterns

If you need more leniency in your color scheme, Color by Number Patterns is designed to give you that freedom. With a customizable 30-color palette, you can choose whatever “light blue” you have that works for you. There are 50 unique images in all on single-sided, black-backed pages for ultimate bleed-through protection. This one is for marker enthusiasts, though all mediums work well with the material.

Adult Color by Number Large Print

Not everyone wants to deal with tiny shapes and details. If this is you, then this large print coloring book should brighten up your day. This is the opposite of a highly detailed coloring book, but the images still come out looking great. With 20 designs, including animals, and flowers, you have plenty of material to get through.

To top it all off, the coloring book features a color guide on the opposite page AND includes test and tip pages. At the end of the book you will find bonus coloring pages that are not color by number, so this one goes after the best of both worlds.

Mystery Colors

Unlock images and find some joy by filling in the Mystery Colors. The excitement increases as you progress and turn a mess of numbers into a beautiful image. Mystery Colors does have single-sided pages with perforated edges, so removing your masterpiece is a breeze. If you want even more of a challenge, check out the opposite page for a hint of what the image is. Then color it in to see if you are right!

Pixel Pictures

Not to pick favorites, but Pixel Pictures does a fantastic job of tying color by number pages to intricate mosaic. The 90 images in the book cover a variety of subjects, including:

  • Animals
  • Flowers
  • Architecture

It is a fantastic size to take wherever you want, not at all oversized like some other coloring books can be. This is a very detail-oriented book, but there is an answer key at the back to keep you on track. You will be surprisingly pleased by the gritty mosaic finish of each image, something you do not see often in coloring.

Animal Stencils Color by Number

There are two tiers of Animal Stencils Color by Number. The original listing is great for coloring with colored pencils or crayons, but if you want to use markers or watercolors there is also a premium option printed on higher-quality paper.

Whichever you choose, the book has a simple 22-color palette that is easy to work with. The 30 different images are printed on a black-and-white background that provides an interesting contrast, especially when you use vivid colors.

Color by Number for Adults: Landscapes

A lot of the time adult coloring books seem to be a half step up from the adolescent-oriented ones, but this landscapes coloring book tests your skill. The detailed images will certainly put your tools to work, so you will feel less guilty for hoarding so many colors.

There are 35 images in all, including:

  • Sunsets
  • Waterfalls
  • Forests

Use the provided color test areas on the opposite page to make sure the color lays down properly. Because the images are more detailed, color matching is more important. This provides a great challenge for advanced colorists and blending enthusiasts.

Stained Glass Color by Number for Adults

There is just something about these color-by-number images on black paper that gives them an ethereal look. The stained glass images are a spot-on imitation of a beautiful art form. With just a 24-color key you can make up 25 images, not including bonus pages sampled from other books. These single-sided pages are removed easily, and you can display them anywhere that needs a little color.

50 Diamond Mandalas

Would a coloring book list be complete without mandalas? In 50 Diamond Mandalas, you work with hand-illustrated designs of different stones beautifully arranged into mandalas and patterns. The limited 21-color key is easy to work with, and the images are easy for all ages and experience levels. Artist Sachin Sachdeva did a fantastic job of balancing detail and colorability.

Dogs Color by Number

Dogs are man’s best friend, and Dogs Color by Number can be your coloring companion. You are bound to find one of your favorite breeds in the 46 pages, including:

  • Boxers
  • Great Danes
  • Spaniels
  • Shepherds

On top of the breed variety, you also have a nice balance of puppies and adult dogs to color. This is a more detailed coloring book, but you can check out the finished images on the inside color for help and direction. The one-sided pages are perforated, so you can easily remove the pages and gift them to the dog lovers in your life.
