Are There Glitter Coloring Pencils?

Yes, there are glitter coloring pencils. They are fun and easy to use and will add that extra little bit of something to your relaxation time. Who does not want the gems in the king’s crown to glitter or the knight’s sword to have that exceptional shine? Or the jewels on the princess’s gown to shine with a unique luster? Glitter pencils are the answer to creating these special effects.

Glitter pencils are available from many of the well-known colored pencil brands. Sometimes they are available as a stand-alone set; sometimes, they are part of a collection of colors. When they are sold as a set, they often have representatives of both the primary and secondary colors; when part of a larger set, they will almost always include gold and silver. Regardless, they will add just that little bit of extra sparkle to your artistic endeavors.

Ways to Use Metallic Colored Pencils

There are a variety of ways to use metallic colored pencils. Here are a few of them:

  • Color with them just as you would a regular set of colored pencils.
  • Create a dark, metallic edge on an item in a picture, then fill in the center with regular colored pencils.
  • Softly blend the metallic pencil with a similarly colored pencil or a complementary color to give the ordinary pencil that metallic gleam.
  • Accent essential items in a picture, such as swords, crowns, jewels, halos, and other items that might have been gilded in the artwork of yesteryear.
  • Highlight an item
  • Blend using a blending solvent.
  • Blend using a blending pencil.
  • Color on dark or black backgrounds

Who Makes Metallic Colored Pencils?

Nearly every colored pencil manufacturer makes metallic pencils. With that said, they are not all created equal, even as colored pencils themselves come in various grades, types, hardness, and styles.

  • Crayola
  • Prismacolor
  • Faber-Castell
  • Derwent
  • Spectrum Noir
  • Liqui-mark
  • Sargent Art
  • Qianshan
  • Artesa
  • Castle
  • Soucolor
  • Premier
  • Only
  • Heartybay

Just to name a few of the various brands of metallic colored pencils. Although some of the brands, such as Prismacolor, will go on a little smoother, even modestly priced sets such as Crayola have their place.

On most review lists, Faber-Castell will be at the upper end of the selection list. Prismacolor is also a contender as one of the leading brands of colored pencils.

Why Use Metallic Colored Pencils?

There can be many reasons for using metallic colored pencils. The metallic colors lend a brightness to colors that might otherwise be drab or dull. The appearance of the color can accent or illuminate pictures of metallic objects or of objects that might naturally have a bit of shine to them, such as a striped lizard or a dragon.

When a page is tipped at just the right angle, the metallic bits in color catch the light, bringing out important features in a painting, just as the gilding on frescos can give them added highlights to bring out the depths of their designs.

But the biggest reason to use metallic colored pencils is that it is fun. Why not use them? There are many things that we once did for fun that we slowly must give up as adults. Few of us climb trees once we have passed age fifty. Even top athletes slowly find that the things they once did slip away from them. But coloring is a pastime that can be shared by nearly everyone, young or old. Using metallic colored pencils brings an element of beauty to your pictures that you might not have achieved without that added touch.

Light Interactive

Artists have been trying to capture the way light and shadow make a difference in a picture since before the Renaissance. For example, the Italian painter Fra Angelico used light rays and gold colors to show the divinity of his subjects.

Painting the Coronation of the Virgin shows the main subjects of the painting floating above a crowd of people. Rays of golden light shine out from them. When you look more closely, you will see that the members of the crowd have halos, showing that they are sainted or divine.  Using metallic colored pencils is unlikely to raise your relaxation coloring to a masterpiece level. But who knows? It might inspire you. It will certainly add an extra touch of illumination to any topic.

Layering Metallic Pencil Colors

Like all colored pencils, you can mix colors by layering. The metallic colors tend to go on smoothly, and by layer three, they are almost too slick for the last layer to “take.” If you are not careful about selection and application, this can produce an almost muddy result. You can further mix it by scraping the top, but it will not act as “scratch art” in the way that wax crayons or even some brands of colored pencils will do.

A Fun Accessory

Metallic colored pencils do a great job in coloring books that have black background pages. The muted colors and metallic sheen are perfect for coloring mandalas, and similar soothing patterns really “pop” off the page.  These pages are then great for framing or even for giving as gifts – suitably framed, of course.

The End Result

As with all adult coloring projects, the goal of coloring with metallic colored pencils is to increase your enjoyment of a pleasurable hobby. Whether you simply wish to apply a flat field of sparkling color, accent important parts of your picture, or use these special pencils to work with your other colored pencils for shading or highlighting, there is a certain something about the sparkling field of color regardless of the hue you select.
